The Worktown series was a collaborative archival project between Michael McGinley, Martin Grimes and the curatorial staff at Bolton Museum. As part of our proposed investigation into the Worktown archive, we began by recording the environment in which the archive is now maintained.
As the project began to take shape the outbreak of the covid pandemic the project stalled. By this point we had begun to examine the ‘Worktown archive’ through the lens and language of contemporary surveillance practices. The photographs presented here are a record of time spend observing the museum in which Humphrey Spenders work is now housed.
Hopefully, at some point the ‘Labelled faces in the wild’ project that was under development will receive the necessary time and resources to become fully realised.
In the meantime you can see a small sample of the work in progress here.
